  • Late Game - Extra Workers/Settlers...

I am in the later stages of a game in which I have 10-12 inactive workers.

I usually automate my workers and eventually they will just gather in one city. Has anyone run into this? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Would it make sense to sweep through my cities and change or replace some improvements manually?

Another issue is I mistakenly built a few settlers that do not have any open land to build, is my only option to hold on to them and wait for a possible war to open up some land?

I am coming from CIV 2 and the ability to trade extra units for shields.

    Thanks

I just pick a hill tile near my capital and put them to sleep (if I really do have more than ten, I'll disband a few and put the rest to sleep).

About the settlers, I build a couple and let them sleep just for that purpose. A settler + culture bomb can take alot of territory before the AI gets its grubby paws all over it.

I'm not talking about pushing back boundries, I'm talking of claiming the large swaths of destruction after a civ goes razing crazy.

About workers: I never have more than 5 workers idle at any time in the game.. you may have too much unless you're stealing them with city conquests. I don't know good worker amounts though, so you might be better off than me /shrug

Since I usually flip out and conquer people my workers always have stuff to do. The automated workers ARE pretty good at not getting killed, once things cool down in an area they all swarm in and get improving.

I also need to use a few to replace elephant camps with workshops and such.

Otoh I don't really use mid-end game settlers... unless I need to claim an island. I'll just capture cities or raze them and leave the land fallow, since late-game borders are so huge that they'll swallow up the land. And if 3rd parties found cities they are easy to flip with some rush-buyed cultural improvements and maybe Hermatige.

Often at the late-end of the game you can customize your cities a bit and re-terraform, depending on the type of victory you are going for. If you are going for diplo, start changing everything into farms to increase your population, for example.

By the existance of this thread, I'm guessing that extra workers and settlers can not be used to join other cities like Civ III?

If so, this makes it important not to build too many of them.

Correct, although it is not that important not to build too many of them. I mean, you never want to waste turns building something you don't need, but I can't see that there is anything worse about wasting turns building a settler than building a lab in a city that will never have research.

Being able to "rush build" terrain improvements at the cost of a worker might alleviate the problem, but it's unknown how imbalancing that would be.
