  • Joint war other leaders

I get an offer to join in war against another civ.
How do I know he is doing his part?

How about when I get one civ to go to war with someone and I’m not at war with them?

If 2 other civs are at war can I see what the progress or results are?

I hate Roosevelt when he decides to befriend a slow growing backward nation that holds
    Ground strategic to my expansion.

You'll see messages when they caputure/raze cities ( X has captured Y!) but you won't be able to see their troop movements.

Also they will at least be at war which means they are both bound to spare at least a few units to throw at each other. Every little bit will make it easier for your part.

If your both at war, you are also able to coordinate attacks on certain cities. This could help influence how the ally progresses against the enemy.

The AI loves to send ships and scouts and the like to keep on eye on my wars, you should do the same.

Spies are very useful for this in the later game.

I send spies to watch other wars I am interested in. You can't be everywhere but can watch some things. Coordinating attacks on a city is essential in multiplayer but can't really be done in single player. You just have to watch to see what your ally is doing and react to that (i.e., let him throw away units cracking a cities' defense and then swoop in and claim the town).

The AI does seem to respond somewhat to what you do. Last night on my earth map game (i'm playing china) I had the AI really help me out....

In this game, the greeks have only 2 cities. I was waiting for one of the AI's to build Versailles, so I could swoop down on that city, and take it out from them, to give me a good base of operations over in that side of the world. But anywaz, Alexander of greece built it with his 2 piddly cities (makes no sense at all.. lol) What great fortune for me!! I was dreading that one of the civs in my 'faction' would grab it. But no... Alexander built it, so I immediately sent some knights over towards his lands..... about 10 turns later, I have a stack of units in place to go to war, and liberate versailles from the pathetic greeks. Once I declared war, and moved my stack close enough to the city to see what they had there, I went "GULP" as they had a huge stack of longbowmen, with some horsearches and spearmen mixed in for good measure. At this point I figured there was no way i could take this city without help, so I called up my good friend Fredrick (who's currently in 1st place) and asked him to go to war with me against the greeks. luckily for me, he was ready & willing to go to war without any compensation from me.

So I just sat with my stack outside the greek city of sparta (with versailles) for a few turns, waiting to see if fredrick would send some units over. Much to my relief, he showed up with a bunch of longbowmen, macement, and 1 catapult! I let his catapult bombard the city, and let his units attack it for a couple turns, and when most of the units were destroyed, and what was left were damaged, I moved in with my knights, and took the city! Thanks Fredrick!!!

And to top this all off, the very next turn I discovered Military Tradition, and was able to upgrade all my knights to cavalry in one fell swoop! Let a few more turns go, to get sparta out of revolt, and took my forces down and liberated Athens in the name of the chinese, and put alexander to death.

So thanks to Fredrick, I know have an excellent base of power in the middle of europe, and with versailles, and only paying # of cities maintenance, and nothing for distance. It's a beautiful thing!

So for the longwinded reply, but I just had to share how perfect things worked out, with help from an AI ally!

I once paid the Egyptians thousands of gold to attack the Russians (Egypt was close to a space victory, so was Peter, so was I). Bizzarely, and it never normally happens, I had a spy on their continent. Egypt and Russia, though formally at war, never exchanged so much as a shot that I could see. They made peace ten turns later and left me looking like a very poor chump.

I won anyway (just), but they out thought my grand gambit.
