  • A couple of interesting crashes since the latest MS autoupdate:

I now no longer get CTDs; instead I get

    BSD STOP crashes @ c000021a
The Windows Logon Process terminated unexpectedly
0xC0000005 (0x0000, 0x0000 can't remember how many zeroes, but no other figure appeared in these last two)

    or

graphics hang with a popunder telling me that DBGHELP.DLL is too old, with a single OK button. Clicking OK takes me to the 'Civ4.exe has generated errors and will be closed' dialog, but I can't find the log file it claims it's generated

Upon investigation I have 7 copies of this DLL, all copyright MS. The latest version, v6.2.13.1, at 795Kb has two copies, in \system32\ZoneLabs and progfiles\grisoft\AVGFree; the identical two in \system32 and system32\dllcache are v5.0.2195.6613 160Kb (I suspect this is the version being used); I also have v5.0.2195.2104 at 160Kb in my Total War install directory, v5.1.2600.0 (475Kb) in a Sim City 4 subdirectory and v6.1.17.2 (747Kb) in the Axis & Allies install directory. I haven't tried moving any of them about yet..

W2K SP4 patched to the latest
    1Gb RAM
    Athlon 32bit 3200+
ATI Radeon 9600 running Catalyst 5.12
    Civ v1.09 patch

Loadsa drive space but the pagefile is only 800Mb on its own partition, plus a 10Mb pagefile on C: (the partition isn't big enough to grow it much more than 800Mb)

I suspect this is another symptom of memory overuse, as it appears to only start happening in large/huge maps during the mid to late game

OK I swapped the DLLs in /dllcache & system32 for the newest ones. After a reboot I now get a helpful popunder that asks me if I want to save a dump (yes, get the giggles over with now, folks). Anyone interested in looking at such a thing, & full or small?

I still don't seem to be able to find the logfile it claims to be creating either..

Search your C: drive for a file named drwtsn32.log. That may be the file in question.

Cheers, found it. Not as helpful as I'd hoped (Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)
        ), but I'll keep investigating..
