      AFAIK, you can simply ignore the error - I got it as well - and the patch will finish to the end.

          OK, let's start at the beginning:

          * Are you using the D2D version of Civ 4? If yes, you need to get the patch from them. D2D = Direct to Drive.

          * (Assuming that you don't have the D2D version.) What, if any, error message do you get when trying to update Civ 4?

          * What version of Civ 4 do you currently have?

          * What else, if anything, did you try before the reg file?

          Keep in mind that the registry fix was provided for someone who already had tried other possibilities, including a complete reinstallation of Windows.

                I don't have Warlords yet, but I would assume Warlords patches Civ4 as part of its install, not as a seperate process.

                  Question. I downloaded the reg and made the necessary updates. Went to run it and get and error

                  The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illeagal instruction.
                  CS:0e60 IP:0100 OP:ff fe 57 00 69 Choose Close to terminate the application.

                  I will say that I have used this before successfully, but recently lost my HD and had to do over.

                  Any Ideas????

                    After editing the reg.txt file, did you save it as a pure text file (using, for example, Notepad)? If you saved it in some other format, that would cause a problem.

                      Ok, I have idiot checked myself on the registry item (passed btw ) and now when installing the 1.61 patch it goes into the windows directory!!! Any ideas why? The patch does not ask me where it should install to, it just does its thing.

                        Let me make sure that I understand your current situation. Is the following correct?

                        When you attempt to apply the reg file, you still get the same error message mentioned in your first post. The 1.61 patch installs without displaying an error message, but installs itself in your Windows folder, not where you installed the game.

                        If you haven't already done so, I suggest a full uninstall of Civ 4, followed by a reinstall and then the patch.

                        After uninstalling, use regedit to make sure that the following registry key was deleted:

                        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}

                        If necessary, delete this key before reinstalling.

                        It now sounds like your registry is damaged, preventing the patch from installing correctly.

                        Let me know if this is unclear, or if these suggestions don't work.

                          Ok,

                          I no longer get the registry error when I update. It performs as expected. I verified that it reflects my current install information.

                          I unistalled Civ 4, I manually cleaned the registry and removed the civ 4 references.

                          I reinstalled Civ 4, updated the reg ( verified correct ) installed the 161 patch. Once again it went into the windows directory. It updates the registry with the windows directory as the new installed directory.

                          I am baffled.

                            OK, let's go back to the beginning. I don't know the explanation for your problem, but would be glad to help troubleshoot.

                            * Are you using the reg file because you get an error message that a copy of Civ couldn't be found (when applying the patch)?

                            * Do you have a CD or DVD copy of the the game (as opposed to a copy downloaded from D2D)?

                            * Did you install Civ 4 for use by a single player on the computer or multiple players?

                            * What is the name of the folder in which you installed Civ 4?

                            * Did you ever install any patches prior to 1.61? If so, what happened?

                            * You might want to look at the folder

                            C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}

                            and see if anything there looks wrong.

                            * If you want to try again, uninstall the game, delete the above folder, along with the corresponding registry key, and then reinstall.

                            * If you export your {CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8} registry key to a file and post it here, I'll take a look. (Please save as a .txt file instead of .reg, to avoid inadvertent importing when opening).

                            I did find one other thread where someone else had the same problem (patch updating to Windows folder), but no solution was posted.

                              Ok, sorry for the delay

                              Are you using the reg file because you get an error message that a copy of Civ couldn't be found (when applying the patch)? Yes

                              * Do you have a CD or DVD copy of the the game (as opposed to a copy downloaded from D2D)? CD

                              * Did you install Civ 4 for use by a single player on the computer or multiple players? single player

                              * What is the name of the folder in which you installed Civ 4? Program Files/Civilization 4

                              * Did you ever install any patches prior to 1.61? If so, what happened? No, this is a clean installation after a hd crash. I have installed from this CD before, patched the registry and installed a patch ( cant remember if it was 1.52 or 1.61

                              Uninstalled game, deleted registry folder, cleaned registry. Reinstalled game

                              After installing the game I checked for

                              C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}

                              Lo and behold it wasn't there.

                              Me thinks this is a major problem and I have no idea why it isn't being created.

                              Before I did a system cleanout, delete and reinstall I did check and verify it was there. Looks like the patch installs it.

                              FWIW the same thing happens with the 1.52 patch

                                This reply might point to why the reg fix isn't working. When Civ 4 is installed for use by multiple players on the same computer, the uninstall info is placed in

                                HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}

                                and that's the key that's updated by the reg file. However, if Civ 4 is installed for use by a single player on the computer, I think the uninstall info is placed in

                                HKEY_CURRENT_USER \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninsta ll\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}

                                Is this latter key present on your system? If so, are the entries the same as the ones in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE? If yes, you should be able to modify the second line of the reg file so that HKEY_CURRENT_USER gets updated instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

                                When I first created the reg file, I didn't know about the different registry locations. If you can verify what I said above, I'll modify the original post to clarify this difference.

                                Please let me know how this goes.
