If I am to discover Confucianism, and if I already have a religion, I usually send it to my neighbor, if he has no religion. That will convert him and in the meantime, I build a couple more missionaries to spread in my civ. So by the time, I convert my neighbor, I have a couple of cities about to be converted to the new faith.

Probably not an optimal tactic...
