  • Missing Resources ??

So far in my limited CIV playing, I have yet to see a crab or deer resource. Is there some randomness to the resources? I searched the entire map (with the resource tags on) and not a single crab, though clams were everywhere (~twice as many clams as civs).

This was on standard/continents/low sea maps.

Anyone else seen (or not seen) missing food resources?

I'm fairly sure that the map generator does NOT guarantee that every resource is present.

Ive played a couple games (on a small map) where there were NO horses.

      It happens.

Okay, as long as I wasn't seeing something weird.

Is there a way to force all resources to be included? I know that there is the option for "balanced resources", but that just refers to resource spread, and probably doesn't force all resources to show up.

              Resource tags?
I'm a bit of a noob at the 4th edition, but I can never seem to find coal in my own, or uninhabited area. So I'm always the only one without railroad...

                  Coal

Some resources, like coal, oil & uranium, aren't visible until you've discovered the appropriate technology.

IME, I've seen a lot of crabs, tuna, whales, but they are sometimes out on the second or third square so you won't see them until you've explored the edge of the landmass or invented boats.

Have I seen deer? Yeah, a few times, but much less frequently than beaver.

In Civ IV, you just can't expect to have anywhere near all resource types in your territory.

Foster good relations and you'll be able to trade resources.

                    Some cluster; some don't.

The good news is that you only need one of Copper & Iron to build Spears & and also only one of Oil & Uranium to build naval units. And in addition, wonders don't require a resource to build, athough in many cases, you'll get a production bonus if you have the right one.

Conquer your rivals territory if you find your own supply unacceptably low.

AFAIK, the "balanced map" gives everybody one of each (strategic?) resources near their starting locations. Probably not every single one, though.

The balanced map script guarantees all strategic resources within a certain distance (I think 6 tiles). So you'll have horse, copper, iron, coal, oil, uranium and aluminium. Sometimes they are still in very poor locations. But at least you'll have those near.

I am not sure if it guarentees one of these per player. If two players are very close together, I don't know if it always generates one for each, or sometimes throws in just one resource for both players.
