  • Several questions that I really need help with!!

    Hello...

I have a few questions that I really need help with, please any help is appreciated.

    1) What does it mean when you roll the mouse over a cottage and it says "city must work to become a hamlet"?

    2) Why does the resource box look exactly the same in the city screen no matter what city I have showing (even if the city is far away on a different island)?

    3) Why are some of the buildings and units greyed out sometimes even when I have all required resources and said technology to build?

    4) Why is the total cost for civics always a low number like 31 when I have all something selected for all five civics which should be a lot more than 31?

    5) Why is there sometimes a yellow glow over a city?

    6) What does the "range" mean for a sam infantry unit?

Those are some of the questions I have for right now, I feel somewhat stuck at certain points without knowing much even with the manual. I'm reading through the manual and civilopedia to learn more.

    1) You need a citizen working that tile(aka a guy using the tile in your city screen)
    2) Not quite sure what you mean here
    3) That shouldn't happen unless you aren't meeting the requirements. Hover over the building to see the requirements, some buildings like Oxford require you to have built a number of universities, etc. Next time you see this, get a screenshot or tell us what it says. I almost always forget that Macement require Machinery tech to build, ugh.
    4) Yeah when you change civics it doesn't really update until your anarchy is over. Sometimes that screen updates correctly as to what my new civic upkeep will be and sometimes it is stubborn and won't do it right.
    5) A yellow glow usually means unhealthiness. It's more greenish-yellowish as I remember it, yucky. You can counter this by building stuff like Aqueduct or hooking up more healthy resources like cows and wheat.
    6) That means the range it can intercept aircraft.

      2. The reason you see the same resources in every city is because the resources are shared by every city in your civ that is connected to the trade netowrk. Any city is in the trade netork if it can trace an unbroken path to your capital by rad (or railroad), river, or coastal square.

edit: If you have a city that cannot trace a path back to your capital then the only resources you will see are those connected directly to that city.

The Cottages thing is probably in our FAQ.
(Do we have a FAQ? If not, when we make one, that Cottage thing is definately going in it)

          3) Some buildings/wonders can only be built in one city at a time. Some buildings require another building to be built first in one or more cities. If a unit is greyed out and you are sure you have all the resources required, make sure you have the resource connected to the actual city in which you wish to build the unit.

Some buildings have other buildings as pre-reqs. You have to build a library before you can build a university in that city, for instance.

As for military units, maybe you don't have the resource connected to that city. i.e. axemen need iron or copper, and even though you might have those resources mined, your city has to be connected to the resource via your trade network (road/river/coast) to build them.

              3) If the building you want to build is a national wonder, it could also be that you already have 2 national wonders in this city (you can only build 2 national wonders in a city, which means that you have to carefully plan in which cities you want to build which national wonder/s )
