Civ 4 causing other games to crash?

While back when I was trying to get Civ 4 running I crashed back to desktop after another of hundreds of attempts to get the game to work. Now on this occasion I got this crash back to desktop but I realised that my Quake 4 game would no longer run and it would crash to desktop when ever I try to run it.

Now has anyone else been getting this or reports of other software being affected?

Nope all my other stuff runs great. Perhaps Quake doesn't like a new driver (???) or the DirectX you are running with?

Dont think Quake and Civ4 are related.
Try to uninstall the game? Try to reinstall DirectX? Maybe you upgraded your video driver, and it's now in conflict with Quake...

Actually, i think it is related - after Civ4 died, i tried loading "The Movies" which had worked fine before, wouldn't load - said my ver of directx was too old.

Reinstalled video card drivers and "The Movies" works but civ has same prob- can't load my save game.

I did try re-installing Quake 4 and deleting any files it leaved behind but the game still won't run after installing it again. So yeah maybe Quake 4 dosn't like my current Direct X drivers or something but this problem is definatly related to Civ 4 as the game died after I went through all that installing,deleting,downloading crap to get Civ 4 working. This is all Firaxis/2kGames fault **waves fist about**
Cronos I'm looking at that link you posted and may try that later but in the mean time I want to get Qauke 4 working again.

Well I've got Quake 4 working by simply rolling back my display drivers to older ones. Well it may not have been Civ 4 that stuffed the game in the first place but it's still Firaxis/Take 2's advice that told me to update my graphics card.
Though I don't understand why newer display drivers would cause it to not work in the first place? Though at least Civ 4 still works with older display drivers.

There is a Major Memory issue in Civ IV. A fix has been produced that really does work. The thread is sprinting towards 32,000 hits at the time of this post - all in 4 Days!

Its not a dubious amateur hack. If you get CTDs - slow down - reboots - massive save files etc - go now to this thread, its put Firaxis to shame

I had a Half life 2 crash last night and i KNOW it was civ4 related. Because of my issues (reboots and monitor going on standby) i have learned to play civ4 for about half an hour before saving and closing down the game,
This lets the hardware cool down, however last night i did the unthinkable and played for a 3/4 of an hour then saving and closing down. BUT i went and fired up Half life2 straight away( oh dear not giving my hardware a chance to cool down) and I got rewarded with my monitor going to standby ( which means i have to manually reboot)
I`ve had enough now, i`m going to purchase a new PC later next year but i wont be putting civ4 on it.
The coding is CRAP and Im sick of people saying "it works for me" and I`m sick of the reviewers saying how great the game is "out of the box"
