I've played about 6-8 games now on Monarch, and have won only 1 game.
The usual predicament I face is how much to expand early. I'm finding that if I expand too fast early, I tend to fall too far behind in tech. I find that if I don't try and keep pace with the number of cities the AIs have, I still fall behind.
With all the early units the AI gets, to expand aggressively in the early game, I'm chopping and pop rushing axemen usually so it's a real challenge to stay in the tech race.
I haven't been very disciplined about city specialization, and I haven't used Great People as much as I probably should be. Especially in games where I go for an early war to expand, I find that I need those pop points and hammers for production of military units.
Any suggestions from those succeeding at Monarch? I usually find myself in the middle of the pack in the mid game and by then it's too much ground to make up.
