  • New nvidia drivers

Nvidia has its latest drivers, dated 11-22-05, available for download at its site. I downloaded them, and for the 1st time Civ 4 played with no crashes or freezes. The drivers, among other things, are compatible with the latest version of directx. For those of you with nvidia cards, I think this will solve most of the problems you're having with Civ4.

I've installed the new drivers, and the previous version, and neither work for me. I have a GeForce 4 MX integrated card, and all I get with the last two driver versions is a black screen at the main menu. I've reinstalled the game after installing the drivers, but still no dice. In fact, it's funny because the game was running fine (a little slow down here and there) no CTDs or anything like that with the 7.xx drivers, but after installing the new one, and then reinstalling 7.x, I started getting CTDs. I also started playing a custom music folder... could that be why the game started the crashing thing??
    Hmmm...

My crashes *seem* related to using the custom button option in start up if i go in via the play now option my crashes have ALL gone..
I`m pretty sure the bug lies with using a custom configuration option maybe even the music?

Speeking of custom buttons, I bought a new mouse shortly before I tried the new drivers, and I started using the custom settings as well. I wonder if it is safe to say that anything "custom" will throw the game into a tizzy.

              Timmy

For the Ge-Force 4 card, try out some of the Older drivers. Contrary to popular belief (Even my belief a month ago) newest drivers are not always the best.

On my Laptop FX 5650 card, I get the best performance from 3DMark and from CIV using 67.42

The newer driver files generally offer fixes for newer cards only (And those fixes sometimes degrade performance on older cards). I gained a 20% improvement in average frame rate in the 3dMark benchmarking by backgrading (The cousin of downgrading) and a similar unbenchmarked improvement in CIV performance on this machine

              (This machine being a PM 2.0 w/ 1GB and 128 MB FX 5650 laptop)

              Your Milieage May Vary.

                I spoke too soon.

                Game still crashes, still freezes.

After I removed the new drivers, I reinstalled ver. 7.something, (I'm not around my computer now so I can't be too specific) things seem to be back to normal. With the old drivers the game ran okay. Now that I reinstalled the 7.xx , I get slow down and CTDs. I also started to play custom music during the game, so I think this may be the cause of CTDs.
