Do first strikes work on offense and defense or only on defense?

I'm still trying to learn all of the rules, and I'm not completely certain how first strike works on offense. I think it works like normal, for example if an archer attacks a spearman it get a first strike. However, I did read somewhere that first strikes only work on defense. So does anyone know if they positively work on offense or not? Thanks for your help!

I'm pretty sure it works both ways. Some units are immune to first strikes, and if the target also has first strikes I think they cancel each other out.
