    Referencing Three Gorges Dam:

Wonders which have the effect of placing in every city a specific building are only valuable when that building significantly affects growth of your civ for a long period of time. Thus, the Pyramids in Civ II were valuable, because they saved you from building granaries and they never expired. Granaries caused your cities to grow twice as fast (as long as you didn't bump up on the aqueduct and hospital limits), which sped your game up considerably, making granaries a good buy. By not having to spend early production on granaries, you were able to move on to other production. It sped up your game.

Three Gorges Dam comes so late in the game I'm not certain it is that necessary. It only provides you with power. That only means a +25% production result in cities with a factory. With the way this game forces city specialization, that may not be that large a number of cities, even on a huge map. And it is VERY expensive to make; only the Space Elevator costs more hammers, and the Space Elevator is twice as fast to make with Aluminum access, whereas the Dam doesn't get any production boosts at all. So it really doesn't give you all that much for the cost.

Still, in my recent AU 100-A game, I did build the Dam, and I suppose it might have been a help in getting my spaceship complete before my rivals. However, it took one of my best cities out of spaceship production until it was complete, and that forced a less-than optimal choice to build the Stasis Chamber. I ended up having to "sweat out" an extra 8 turns to completion beyond what I would have had to wait had the city that built the dam been able to start on the Chamber right away.

So, if you are a Dam proponent, convince me.

Minor correction: Power provides +50% production on top of a factories +25% ... so thats a total of 75%.

Anyhow, i tend to agree with your analysis. Unless one has a big empire with lots of specialized production cities, the Dam isn't really worth it. In my own games where the average city count per civ is between 6-8, i usually only have 3 specializied production cities - the others that are specialized for food/commerce don't even have a forge.

So in a scenario like that, the Dam would be a waste of hammers.

Your are all generalizing fast here!

It is the game that determines if you need it.

Like me, I were in a in a game with non-stoppable wars. Really I think I fought the whole world. When fighting a 4 front war, you need every unit, every damn unit or else you are toast. It was a fighting for survival of my Civilization, so without this, I would have lost.

I'm not certain that's correct. I don't have the manual with me right now, but I recall the wording being something like, "Factories - increase production by 25%, by 50% with power."

That would be a +25% from power, not +50%. Do you have in game confirmation to the contrary? I could just be dreaming it.

Do a mouse over on the Production in the city screen.

It will show +50 buildings, +50 power

We know the forge produces +25, so that leaves +25 for the factory and obviously the +50 power refers to the power plant.

Yep, I just looked at it. Indeed, a factory without a forge shows +25% hammers, but when power is given, it adds an additional 50% of the base. Yikes!

The wording on this in the manual and the Pedia needs to be changed; it says what I quoted, and means an ADDED +50% with power.
