Hmm, I think I'm going with the it's just alex with close borders theory or the I don't have enough troops compared to my gnp/production.

I didn't think 4/6 rank in army size was that bad, I mean I can't keep up with the AI in terms of units produced, I was already just over the free unit limit in that game and I hate to overbuild military.

I dunno why we didn't have mutual military struggle + diplomactic relations, mayber it goes away once the civ is annihilated? I dunno, I've seen weirdness with that bonus.

So does upgrading my units give me more army size or do I just have to crank out tons of units just so it seems like I have a huge military.

Oh and in case you are intereseted, since my army was not really upgraded(just prepared to wipe out Cyrus) and all the way on the other side from my main cities, I gave up, no way could I save my good cities, Alex had stacks and stacks of cavalry. GG Alex, last time I try to be nice to you. Thanks for the replies.

You can get a negative "You made an arrogant demand" modifier if you demand stuff, so be careful about demanding from friends. I'm not sure if you'll get this with friends or only with those with less friendly relationships.

I wonder how the computer differentiates between a request for help and a demand for tribute when you ask an AI for something and offer nothing in return.

Yes, you WILL get negative points for making a demand - that's why it's important to read the phrasing of how you ask for it - if it words it like "could you spare this for a friend" then you're golden - it shouldn't hurt relations.

IIRC, the only other verbage there is "We demand you give us this in tribute!", so I think it's pretty obvious the effect of that!
