I can't quite figure out the logic behind selecting units in a stack. When I try to select a group of combined arms from a larger stack various combinations seem to get selected when I'm holding shift and pressing one of the units. For instance I had some mech infantry and sams selected and wanted to add 2 of my 4 modern armors. For the life of me I couldn't select one of the units without selected them all. I've also had situations where if you press shift it will select some of the units but not others. What gives with this?

Selecting units in a stack.

I think that if you have previously had some units within a stack selected it has some kind of memory that might interfere with your intended choice of units now. I have been pretty successful in selecting an arbitrary group from within a stack if I first make sure that all previous selections have been "erased". I think you cna do that by clicking on a single unit twice. So, when I want to select an arbitrary group I click the first unit twice, then hold shift and click more units. Hope this helps.

There is a button in the task pane which splits a stack into individual units. Clicking twice on a single unit removes that unit from the group, but all other grouped units will remain in the original grouping.
One thing I did note is that if I want to add a unit to an existing group, I can either have the group active and shift click the unit to add, or I can have the unit active and shift click any unit in the group to add to. Comes in handy if yu want to keep a group of units active but don't want to spend time skipping the turn for every individual unit. Press space once and the whole group skips.

I find it's useful to enable the "left mouse click" menu in options. Without that, I was accidently issuing move orders and other command and control problems among my troops.
The left mouse click allows you to select a stack and look at the contents, then yes, using the group/ungroup icons can give you the control you need over the units.Haven't been here for ages....
