  • Upgrading units?

I can't find any reference to upgrading units (e.g. warrior to axeman) in the PDF game manual. The civilopedia lists these upgrades, but I don't know how to do it.

And also: am I crazy or do you need animal husbandry to build chariots? If so, why is it listed in the wheel tech?

if you have the tech, the resources (if any), and the unit is inside your culture boundaries and hasn't moved, you'll be able to click a button at the bottom center of the screen, where all the other unit command buttons are.

as for your other question, many units require more than one tech/resource. yes, chariots need both the wheel and horses, and horses require animal husbandry

If your unit is fortified or on sentry, you need to click on it.

Also, there has to be a complete upgrade chain, in the case of upgrading knights to gunships. You can actually have Rcoketry without researching Military Tradition, which allows the link in the chain, Cavalry.

The multiple requirement has caught me out badly before when I've tried to rush to macemen only to find I had a whole other part of the tech tree to cover before unlocking them after reaching machinery.

You can also upgrade it if it has moved, as long as the unit still has MP left.
So, for example you could move a unit until it has one MP left and then upgrade it (which means the last MP for that turn will be lost due to the upgrade).
I often did it when I had to respond to enemy invasions and had obsolete units moving on my road network towards thew enemy forces.

I thought you needed to be inside a city to upgrade.

Lol, after all these games, I never knew you could do it anywhere in your cultural boundaries. I just never thought to check

Is the "tree" of upgrades plotted graphically anywhere?

Erm yes, I think I saw it on CivFanatics last night.

Edit: darn, can't find it anymore.
