After a week of Civ 4 I threw the bloody thing in the trash. Never again will I buy another Civ game.
Not only does the game crash unendingly, (the patch fixes nothing), it also causes other games, and programs to crash as well.

Game worked out of the box for me. Patch sped things up slightly and increased stability.

Game has had and still has numerous compatibility problems which are caused by [apparently] almost complete lack of compatibility testing by Firaxis.
This has been said before in cIV tech forums:

It seems that they got it running on their machines and then just sent out for us to test and fix compatibility with other hardware setups later..

If your machine comes close in configuration to what Firaxis was using or if you are simply lucky, it works 'out of the box' for you, if you are neither of both you run into problems.
The more distant your setup seems from what Firaxis have been testing the more likely you are to run into problems.

So let's not be ignorant.

Its not a good way to be treated as customers but its something PC gamers should expect. If you buy a game in its first month then you should accept that there is a fair chance that it won't run satisfactorily/at all on your machine. You can either take that chance and wait for the patch, upgrade your machine to a more mainsteam set of hardware, or wait 6 months. (my favorite option as the price goes down, not that you should have paid more than £20.) A week is only a long time in politics, so throwing Civ4 away after that and vowing eternal emnity between House Frostking and House Firaxis is a bit premature.

Its the going on the internet and screaming "FIRAXI$ R TEH NAZI! SID M£IR = HITLAR" that really gets me down... that and the people who think Civ4 should be playable on the same computer as Civ2.

I did not call Sid Meir Hitler. Neither did I say that I hated Firaxis. I DID say that I will not buy another Civ title, that is simply stating a fact.
I had my computer custom built one year ago specifically to play games. Very expensive, that.(I have also kept all hardware, and software up to date). It meets or exceeds all requirements for Civ4.
As for throwing a fit, I waited patiently until the patch came out before saying to hell with it. As I stated, the patch fixed nothing.
Premature? Not at all. If you bought a color TV, brought it home, found out it didn't work, how would you feel. When I put my money on the counter at Wal-Mart, I expect what I pay for to work. If it don't work, why the hell is it for sale?

frostking has a point, I have a descent computer that meets all requirements but I have problems from time to time. I would have waited a few more months to let Firaxis make it more compatable. I still love it though!

Why don't you try to fix your problems?
Post the exact errors here, maybe we can help you getting the game to run.
Computers are complex things and there are billions of different configuration possibilities.

It's impossible to have it working on all systems. You simply can't test it on any possible configuration.

I am a software developper and I've never released any product that immediately worked for 100%.
Perhaps that was possible 15 years ago, when configurations were much easier. Right now it surely isn't. And I don't know any coleages who have ever released anything bugfree.

The game works at most people's computers. Firaxis is busy trying to fix all problems. Don't get angry that easily, keep on trying or wait for the next patch.

If not, please don't trow the game away but send it to me, I know some friends who want to have it
