  • When do your games typically finish?

I've seen a couple of references to Space Race and other victories prior to year 1900, and I'm wondering if this is common.

I just won a Space Race victory last night in the year 1992, for a total score of 9600 (Monarch difficulty).

Most of my games seem to end in the late 1900s, with someone winning by Space Race.

I was co-leader in tech in that game just described. Had a relatively strong military (tech-wise, superior...but I had a smaller number of units). I probably had 10-12 cities and 35% of the land mass, and looking back on it, I'm not sure there's much I could have done differently to win the game earlier short of teching exclusively for military, but then I'd definitely have lost via the Space Race.

So, in short, I'm wondering what's a common time for the game to end in your experience.

I think it depends on many variables including difficulty level, map type and size, epic/normal setting, etc. The first games I played were on epic, and I think it's easier to finish earlier than on normal speed.

Also, I'd say it might be easier to finish early when going for domination over space victory, since the tech advance and building of space ship components are not required. but like you say, if you commit to domination victory, you run the risk of losing to a tech leader building the space ship. I prefer to disable space and diplomatic victory, when I want to play a dominatiion game. Disabling space victory, means that the AI has to stay Earth bound and fight it out, but there is still the time clock, and 2050 can roll around before you achieve domination.

But I think what you suggest (1992), is typical for a space victory. The last two games, I've had 1895 domination on monarch/epic/standard/pangea, and 2026 domination emperor/normal/standard/pangea.

usually between 2000 and 2050. I think this game I'm playing on a huge map will end much earlier though. Having lots of cities is just easier for me.

I should have noted...my games are typically Standard map size, normal game speed, and usually a Pangaea map.

Ive recently won a domination victory around 1940ish i think, and got a "Agustus Ceaser" victory, woot. I'll have to double check the year. But napoleons agresive seems to make amphibiouse assaults all too easy...

Unfortunatly it was a noble difficulty game (set by accident) so it was just too easy.

(yet mansa munsa still out teched me even though i had twice the land space/ cities he had... /sigh. But he and ghandi went out like they didnt understand war, Perhaps are they actually coded to not fight so well? Cyrus definatly can wage effective war as well as a few others, but these 2 just rolled over and died. Maybe it was purely difficulty related)

On the next difficulty level I'm always playing tech catchup and never seem to be comfortable assaulting civs with better units like they usually do.)

What ive noticed, Quick games seem to last to near 2050. Normal into the 1990- 2010 range. Epic space victories CAN happen pre 1900 Last game i lost was a 1905ish space race loss. ( i was trying a cultural victory with only 3 cities. set at 1 above noble, forget what its called.)

I haven't had a game that wasn't won as a Space Victory. I usually play on a Large map on Epic speed with type Terra or Continents. I would like to try a Cultural Victory. I'm usually a builder, but I find cultural victories not to be as common. Maybe I just need to emphasize the culture slider a bit more.

The game I just played on a huge map, second or third easiest level (first time on civ4, so i thought it best to be a chicken ), and then I have the spaceship ready by 1860, but I could have built that about 1830. However, I wanted some extra points so I went for future tech's, shipped away lots of workers to help the more distant cities... And now I cant launch the ship *sobs*
Its complete, but nothing happens... Updated to 1.09, rebooted and even loaded a savegame from before the ship was complete to see if it would work, but nooo...

If you're popular enough or have enough of a voting bloc you can beeline to Mass Media easily and get a very fast Diplomatic Win. I think Late 1700s was the best I managed once with that.

So much depends on the map, opponents, etc. Generally speaking, most of my games finish (for good or ill) in the 20th century. My earliest victory was 680 AD, conquest, tiny, 2 enemy civs.
