  • Workable tiles ?

    Hi

In a recent game, I had a very improved tile, within my culture/nation/city borders (ie: the coloured ones you see on the map). However, I couldn't get the closest city to work it. Why is this? I haven't found anything in the manual dealing with this.

And if you can't work tiles more than 2 squares out anyway, why are my automated workers improving them???

Well, as you seem to know, workable tiles are those within the city's "fat cross". Not simply within your cultural boundary.

As to why an automated worker would improve a tile not within the "fat cross"....I can't speak to that since I never automate them and have no experience with that.
While there might be a physics engine that applies to the jugs, I doubt that an entire engine was written specifically for the funbags. - Cyclotron - debating the pressing issue of boobies in games.

This fat cross is not mentionned anywhere in the manual, nor did I see any graphical clue about its existance.

In smac, every tile you see on the map in the city screen can be worked. The other tiles are simply hidden. http://www.strategy-gaming.com/previ...tauri/city.jpg
Not a big deal, but how are we supposed to "know" such thing? Looking through the manual again didn't tell me how this fat cross looked like, but I'm sure I'll soon find out from experience.

Thanks for answering my question (and sorry for my newbie-rant and smac-plugging)

As was mentioned, the workable tiles are the :fat X".

I do automate workers, at least, some of them, and the only time I have seen automated workers improve a non workable tile is when it was a resource or I was seeing the "fat X" incorrectly.
        If you aren't confused,
        You don't understand.

I'll double check but I am pretty positive that I have had the blue circle recommendations to make certain improvements outside any city radius.

            no problem,

The city screen can be a bit confusing since, as you stated, the city screen does indeed show non-workable tiles.

That is misleading to newcomers. But your experience with smac should serve you well. It's the same idea.

As for the manual and pedia, they leave a bit to be desired.

There's no economic or production advantage to improving those tiles outside the city radius. However, it can sometimes provide a military benefit. If you get invaded by an enemy, they'll pillage those improvements. While they will earn a bit of gold doing so, it will take time, giving you the opportunity to deal with them before they impact your city infrastructure.

FWIW, the "fat cross" is three tiles across and two tiles out from your city. It should look something like this:

                Code:
                 XXX
                XXXXX
                XXcXX
                XXXXX
                 XXX

                Or something like that.

it's more of a "fat plus symbol"

turn smac's grid 45 degrees and you have it.

Since the map is no longer isometric, that could be a brief moment of disorientation.

You saw that? I tried like 10-12 time to get that darn thing right...

The workable area has been the same since civ1.

I guess the boys from Firaxis thought it to obvious to include in the manual. They probably hate newbies

I dont know what version of the game you guys have, but in my manual (bought in the US) it mentions the fat cross (at page 62 to be exact), along with screen shots to further explain the concept... On page 61 it explains, that a city can only work tiles in that area... So really i dont think firaxis to be newbie unfriendly is the problem here, but people acquiring the manual (along with a bought copy) and then reading it or maybe different language versions might (at the most)...
