Does anybody know how spock gets turned off and on? He was on until i installed 1.09 and now I get not only no blurbs when i get a tech, but also no announcement that i have done so (when the blurb is off in MP). This is not critical, i still have to delete the cache to get a stable game from one to the next (w/o black terrain anyway), but it was at least amusing and gave some recognition of a tech. Plus it would be nice to be able to turn it back off when i've played the thing hundreds of times.

Have you checked the sound options?

they are all on.
i'll try flipping them off and on again, prior to patch i had music off.
I was also referring to the visual blurbs that come up. They aren't movies, since they worked when in-game movies were off. I don't see a reference in options or the .ini file.Every man should have a college education in order to show him how little the thing is really worth.

It sounds like you need more RAM. Did I mention that Civ IV eats RAM like it is candy?____________________________

I think I distracted from the point. Spock is not working. The other problems with the game are not immediately pressing since they appear to be global problems with lots of people, and provided I clear the cache, they don't occur 95% of the time.
Pre-patch with the same settings I have right now (music/ambience off), tech blurbs would come up with the occasionally amusing quote, but mostly as an acknowledgement that a tech was discovered. Even in MP, there was at least a short audio notice that a tech was researched "you have discovered pottery". While it is visually apparent that a tech was achieved, and a menu comes up to select a new one, this feature of the game is now not working post-patch. Since its not apparent in the menus or the .ini where this would have been changed I can only assume it was an effect of the patching on my system. I am not sure how this would be fixed, other than uninstalling, and was checking to see if anyone had some ideas on how it turns off and on.
edit: see tech popups thread, sounds like turning movies on/off is now linked to these. That sucks.Every man should have a college education in order to show him how little the thing is really worth.
