  • Problems with ATI Radeon 9700

I got Dell Dimension 4550+ Pentium 4 2.66GHz, 1 Gb ram and ATI Radeon 9700 with 128mb memory.

I installed DirectX 9.0C (4.09.0000.0904) from Civ4 CD and Catalyst 5.10 video drivers from ATI. Now when I try to run dxdiag, the DirectShow test fails and dxdiag crashes. Also display properties -> advanced tab doesn't work, I get this BSOD:

    ***STOP: 0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x8057DA4F, 0XB7ECC7C4, 0X00000000)

Next I installed Catalyst 5.11 from ATI but the same problems continued.

Then I installed Omega driver version 2.6.75a. This time I get to run advanced tab without problems but I dxdiag still fails.

About Civ4, my first game with standard map and version 1.00 worked fine during the whole game with no crashes. Only problem was stuttering wonder movies.

I then started a game with large map & 16 civs. This time the start went well but at the time I finished Stonehenge, I started to experience problems. My PC would suddenly comletely boot for opening a city display for example.

Next I installed the patch 1.09 and it got worse. I opened an earlier savegame and ending a turn would cause my PC to reboot.

Does anybody else got problems like this? If you are a ATI Radeon owner, please try to run dxdiag and see if it completes without errors. I'm wondering whether the Directx version that comes with Civ4 CD is faulty.

I never got as far as you. When I tried to install the Direct X version that came with the game I was told that a cabinet file necessary for installation can not be trusted. Therefore it wouldn't install. I have direct X 9.0c already as it came with other games and they play perfectly. I have a ATI radeon 9800AGP. After what happened to you I am quite glad I couldn't install it. Think I'll stick to civ 3 until a solution is provided. If you bought any other product that didn't work then you'd take it back for a refund. Unbelievable.
