  • Sapphire Radeon 9200 Atlantis 256mb

Has anyone got this running with that card? (Sapphire Radeon 9200 Atlantis 256mb - I know it's crap but it runs everything else fine).

Help would be appreciated - what drivers you're using, anything else, etc..

Have tried every fix known to man and still get CTD's and BSOD after a few turns.

    Rest of specs are :

    Athlon XP 2000+
    512mb RAM
160Gb HDD - not that that should matter
    VIA chipset
    XP sp2

K.. everything is updated as follows :

    Latest motherboard drivers from VIA

Latest sound drivers from VIA (AC'97)

Running latest Omega drivers for the Radeon - have tried 5.11 Cats, gone back to 4.12 Cats, tried equivelant Omega 4.12's, gone back to latest Omega's. All have pretty much the same results throughout.

Have checked logs in Event Viewer on XP which came up with several results on each crash :

    1. Was a problem with Miles Sound System (I forget the exact dll (mss32.dll i think).. Not had that since updating sound drivers.

    2. Next one was problem with d3dx9_26.dll so I thought I'd try re-installing that from http://www.toymaker.info/Games/html/d3dx_dlls.html

So this time it just froze entirely after a few turns.

Then thought I'd try d3dx9_27.dll and got a CTD after a few turns. Which resulted in this :

    3. Problem with civilisation4.exe.

So.. I'll put d3dx9_26.dll back in which will revert me back to problem 2.. Confusing, huh?

Right. So I've tried running it in a window and without, put on logging, changed other things in config.ini and had pretty much the same CTD's and BSOD's.

Also installed it on a second HDD which makes no difference.

    Running outta options.. any ideas?

/cursing the day I ever bought Civ I for my ancient 286 and got hooked...

Bit of an update on that :

Pulled some RAM outta my second PC and upped it to 768mb..

Managed to play longer than ever before but still ended up CTD..

    Still not sorted..

      Here's one suggestion

not terribly helpful sorry, but I suspect the card really isn't helping, it's very underpowered.

oh and have you installed the patch?

Lol, yeah.. cool, I know the card is crap but it can run everything else going..

Don't really wanna spend 100 odd squid on a new one for a game that cost £30..

And I've got the patch yeah.. and uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times.. lol

          k.. Sorted!!

Doing an update of blink and miles sound system sorted it. Was mentioned in a thread here somewhere but I forget where.

Had a suspicion that it was Miles sound thingy causing all the hasle and it was. Been playing for 1/2 hour so far - longest ever.

Now I'm gonna be late for college 'cos it's 1.16am and I'm meant to be up at 6.. but who cares =)
