  • Circumnavigating The Globe

I usually prefer to play on islands, with a light coastal defense and a strong navy.

Therefore, the permanent +1 bonus to naval movement that one gets from first circumnavigating the globe is really important. This is a top priority for me in every game.

And yet, about a third of the time I get beat to it by the AI.

I wonder if anybody has come up with tips on this.

I guess I could make a new civ that starts with Sailing!

    It's a game of chance.
If the AI is luckier in having a more straight route around the globe, so be it I would say.

start with your galleys and get as far around the islands as you can. With open borders agreements you can usually get pretty far on that type of map. If you wait till caravels, you will never make it.

It's nice to have, but I don't consider it a necessity. Even though I play on archipelago maps alot.

You don't technically have to sail around the world.

The game doesn't even know if you really did it or not. All the game checks for is at least one square in every column is uncovered (i.g., no fog of war), so it can form a 'line' from east to west that is not interrupted by fog of war.

So you want tips? Trade world maps. This seems to be the quickest way of doing it.

But don't forget, by giving your world map to someone else, you increased his chances to of forming a "line" from east to west.

I just hate that scary sound when you (or someone else) circumnavigates the globe.

I'm also beginning to get scared of that declare war sound as well. As I know there will be ungodly number of units invading my land shortly.

Yep, same thing when someone discovers a tech that gives a free great person

Back on topic.. I found it quite easy to circle the globe on my last game.. Basically I closed my borders off to anyone wanting to get through :P Dedicate 2 galleys by the time you get 5 or so cities to explore in both directions. If you're stuck, set them on auto-explore and see if they find a new route.

I'm not sure that the game checks every column.
While I can't offer screenies, I got the Circumnavigated bonus when there was still a black vertical line separating 2 of my galleys.
(Duel/Tiny Islands/Settler to try and culturebomb the enemy capital)
I would have circumnavigated next turn anyway, just thought it was a little odd =]

Concur with Enigma_Nova, I had a game where I got the bonus while at least one column was still all black.

Good comments here. Thanks. I've certainly tried the galleys in every way I can imagine. I'll consider trading maps.

Although I prefer to just stay as 1-1-1-1-1-1 on the demographics screen and scorn the AIs.

when I get beat to the punch, it seems to be by 2-3 ship moves

and this happens well before exchanging maps

I usually have issues with boarders and ice bergs

                  then there is building Harbor/Drydock

Pick +1 move as second promotion

In fact, you don't even need a unbroken circle of your explored map. All you need is that the coordinates of your explored map cover all possible x value (or in case of "tilted world" map, all possible y value).

It is stupid, and should be fixed.

I don't want it to be fixed.

One way to speed up your progress could be to explore using work boats. They become available sooner than the Galley, so you can get right to it. Send two work boats in opposite directions, and you'll be in business.

Work boats for circumnavigating the globe! Now there's a concept! That would work on some small maps.
