Trade routes - how do they work?

Question about city-to-city trade routes.

How exactly is it determined how many trade routes you can have? What is the formula for how much money you get?


In the files i can see that each city is limited to 8 trade routes max - not that i've ever seen so many. But thats about all i know of trade routes.
