I know that the techs are more flexible in Civ 4, but I'm not sure what's happening. Some techs have prerequisites that don't show up in the Tech Advisor screen, but on the paper tech tree in the box, lines are all over the place! Can anyone clear it up? What are these optional paths, etc?

in the tech advisor screen the lines represent all the optional pre-requisites (OR gates)...if there is also a mandatory pre-requisite it is shown in the upper right of the tech as a small icon. For instance take a look at code of laws and you'll notice a small icon that is identicle to the writting picture, this means that writting is a mandatory prerequisite.Comment

A quick way of finding out what the prereqs for a certain technology are is by just clicking on it. The computer will automaticly select all required technologies to get there.Comment
