  • Methods for producing Great Prophet in early game?

    I'm having fairly good success over multiple games on Prince level. But there's one problem.

    In my earlier games, I always took a Civ with Industrious trait, and built Stonehenge (?) early, and a number of turns later, received a Great Prophet and I built my shrine.

    Lately, I've been playing Civs without Industrious, and I've been focusing on worker/settler production and neglected the Stonehenge...and ultimately, I've produced no Great Prophets. Without which, no shrine, which means even though I may have 40% of the world's population following my religion after missionary dispersion, I'm making no money from it.

    So...short of bee-lining for Stonehenge in the early game (and slowing down your expansion), what other methods can I use to produce the Great Prophet?

    Get a temple and make a priest specialist in one of your cities. Should turn you out a Great Prophet in little time.

    I believe the Oracle also increases Great Prophet rate, plus gives you a free tech. IMO a much better early beeline wonder grab than stonehenge. Might even be cheaper, but not sure.

      I've found that a large percentage of the wonders out there produce great prophets so Stonehenge is easily replaced by a huge number of other potential wonders when it comes to producing prophets. As others have said you can also just build a temple and add a priest specialist.

          I've always found Stonehenge to be ridiculously easy to build by contrast to other wonders. If I expand quickly and I'm not playing creative, I almost always go for it to get to full city-tile capacity.

          However, if you're worried about quick-term bang, building the Oracle can be just as effective or moreso if you've delved in a particular direction with your tech (like the Civil Service rush.)

          If neither appeals to you because you simply refuse to build a great wonder, you'll need a priest specialist, post-temple.

            Cathedrals and similar structures of other religions allow 2 priest specialists, temples allow 1. Remember that if you can get 2 temples in a city that you can then add 2 priest specialists(those buildings stack). Briefly going to pacifism can also speed things up just like building that +100% great people birth rate wonder(forgot name).

            I also have had that problem especially when I build many other wonders. Then do I often a get a lot of other specialists before I get a great prophet.

            Using specilaist to get great prophets can in the long run be better then using wonders, because with specialists can you stop producing great prophet points the moment you get one, this while wonders keep producing them. Then you have the risk of getting other unwanted great prophets while other great people could be more usefull.

              i hate great prophet wonders...... after your shrine is built, the great prophets just annoy me.

              I had a 80% chance to get a great engineer, 12% to get great prophet, and 8% to get a merchant. WTF do you think i got? A gawd damn great prophet.

                Great Prophet's rule when added to a city as a "super specialist", they add 2 hammers and 5 gold. I usually have 2 each in my 2-3 largest cities. Think of the gold alone with just 4 of these guys: 20 gold *per turn* the rest of the game. Get those early on and that's a whole lot of $$$!

                You can also use one coupled with another type of great person to start a golden age.
                You can also use one to get a technology or a great % of research toward one.
