None of the above (Other). All leaders are for historical flavor only.
Since civ is definitely an Ahistorical game, they are all pretty irrelevant. From now on I will be applying random traits (personalities) so I don't know what behavior to expect from them.

The use of Lincoln as the leader of America in Civ 3 presents an interesting paradox because Lincoln's sole claim to "greatness" was leadership in a war against fellow Americans. Lincoln did not help to build America, or lead it in defense against an external foe. Rather, he fought a long, bloody, economically devatating war for the principle that the Union could be kept together by force rather than by finding the compromises needed to ensure that it would truly work for the common good of all of the states.

Enough good came out of the war, especially regarding putting an end to the evils of slavery, that many people regard Lincoln as great. But portraying Lincoln as the leader of the American civilization when most of his leadership consisted of fighting fellow Americans, and when he never at any time led an America in which all of the states participated in the manner set forth by the Constitution, seems a bit odd. Lincoln was not the leader of the American civilization, but rather was the leader of one faction of the American civilization against another.

nbarclay - right on about Lincoln. Don't accept that Yankee propaganda.

I think that Xerxes (Persia) and Hammurabi (Babylon) are major exclusions. I would have preferred more Civs to alternative leaderheads. Also sad to see that the Celts were not included. Hope that these three, Persia, Babylon, and Celts are included in a future expansion.

On the topic of slavery, I think Patrick Buchanan had it nailed when he said that although people of European descent took slaves, they were not the first to do so, but they were the first to make the Emancipation Proclamation.

Maybe people who really believe what they preach should spend less time 'feeling guilty' about European and American history and attack slavery in Israel, Africa and all the other places where it still takes place TODAY.

Never thought about it that way... Although, I don't know enough about the US civil war either. Interesting perspective, in any case.

Yeah, just because a lot of people don't know anything about Mao makes him appear in this game, pretty weird.
