Forest reappearing

I can't run any tests for at least a week as I'm on a m/c with no C4 capability, but is it possible to run a game to see how forests automagically reappear? Are they completely random chance, are they semi-random or do they conform to some sort of ruleset?

My brief observations in-game & supposition from in here is that they're semi-random, partially conforming to the 'Life' ruleset; does anyone have any thoughts?
