It started to fad out, it started to hang, to crash, to get an all black screen. I think much of this is from a memory leak as when I reload the game it usually plays fine for a few turns.
I had the same problems when I tried the Ice Age scenario, otherwise it runs ok. So, I guess I'll have to wait to play the scenarios... :'( (Assuming the patch takes care of this!)

Once I fix my computer and get back access to the Internet, I may quit playing, too. I can only play a few hours before it starts slowing down. I really prefer playing on the bigger maps. Right now, I'm only playing on a standard map with eight civs. It's around 1200 AD and running fine, but we'll see how it goes.

The game is just really unfinished. I would be ashamed of shipping out a product like this.

Has anyone with problems actually run Task Manager to see what is Civ IV's working memory set?

I checked it one turn before Space Race victory on a large map, and discovered it was using 970MB of memory (I have 2GB, and I had nearly 750MB of free memory).

970MB is a LOT if you only have 512MB or even 1GB...

I'm wondering if this really IS a memory leak, or if it actually IS using all that memory.

The reason I wonder is because if it really WAS a memory leak, then having a large (1GB) swap file would minimise the effect of the leak. This is due to the fact that unused memory would get swapped out to disk, and would just sit there consuming disk space but no time.

Of course, the swapping out of memory takes a wee while, but would be insignificant compared to not having enough LIVE memory, where it gets swapped in and out all the time.

I assume most people will have increased their page files to at least 1GB if they are having trouble - if they still have problems (and there's a lot of disk activity) that would tend to indicate a large working memory set rather than a memory leak (or perhaps in combination with a memory leak).

I wish a programmer would comment, but could the problems being encountered possibly be something inherent in the Python language itself, and not in the specific coding used to produce this game? If so, then improving performance would require improvements in the efficiency of the Python computer language itself.

There, there... No need to stress yourself... Send the game back and they refund you.

If this don’t work, I’ll buy your game… What about 10 bucks?

I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

I just checked my virtual mem and it is set to 1500+MB and I have 1GB real, so I would expect that to be sufficient.

But maybe not for very late in the game any one have some data to show one way or the other?

I would think that could have been tested by them and at least published some recommendations.

I can't play the game either. My computer keeps freezing solid. If I start a new game I could play longer but it will too eventually crash. If I load a saved game I can't play more than a few turns.

Tried all the video drivers. Tried fiddled with the driver settings. Even set the game's graphics to the mininum. Nothing helps.

                      I am really pissed.

Ack! I hope the patch helps you guys. I'm one of the lucky ones, I guess, for whom the game works well.

I see Nvida has newer drivers now 81.94 as 14th. I used 81.5x, so I will drop that in, up the swapfile and try again.

I am not expecting anything to change, but who knows. I really suspect that two issues are involved. A leak and video. The leak may be helped with a very large swapfile, but the vid is out of my hands.

Glad it is going for you Arrian, have you tried any games that were Dominaton or Conquest only? Any AW ones? Games that forced a lot of units are the ones that really brought it to a head for me.

Early games with Space worked fine for me as well. It was ugly during AW with raging barbs on pangea, but when I played with Dom/Conquest only allowed and played some past winning, it really broke down.

The more land I controlled and the more troops, in both the worse it became.

Urban, at least it gave me time to squeeze in some MOO, but I am getting anxious to try more IV.

Ah, I see. I've been playing standard maps w/the default # of civs and I've been playing quite builderish - winning SS victories and such.

Civ III was the exact same way on large maps. When you got to the late game every turn took longer.. and longer.. and longer. And things got slower.. and slower.. and slower. So I can see how your games get affected.

My games get affected too, I just deal with it. Maybe I am more tolerant of it and hope 2 years from now it will run smooth as butter on a 10 Ghz 5GB PC8000 memory with a 1 terabyte HD. You can always dream

I played lots of Sid games on huge maps with out any pain. I even played on super maps 250x250 and the turns slowness did not deter me.

If it was merely a matter of waiting, I would be ok. It is the feeling that disaster is coming, every second. I mean you can just be scrolling the map and have it go into the flashing the map with no units/troops shown.

I am such a nut that I have been looking for a videeo card on the web that may be better and more reliable. I just cannot find any that seems to be a good bet.

Well that and the fact that I am not willing to dump another 400 bucks into it.

I guess I could play Duel maps, that seemed to not stress it any.
