...And you want to smash him or her or them in the fastest possible way and play some serious civ...?
    Girlfriend or kids?

Edited: Not a wife, I’m 99% sure... Wives don't like a game (in fact, almost anything) if their husbands do. It's a law of nature.
GFs tend to pretend they are interested, but they aren't. Smash her in 20 turns and all will be fine. Kids just want to play and play and play and they will never leave your computer alone again, so you have to make this game an example: kick their little a$$es in the most humiliating way... Then, they will leave you and your computer alone… For a while.

I would like to see blind city placement. seriously.

most cities in the world are not placed by governments, they grow from smaller settlements settled usually independently. civilian cities should grow on their own but you could also establish military posts and trading posts (though the latter should possibly also be blind...) that would have a chance of growing into cities...

its realistic, and who knows, it might even be fun. total control is getting boring...

This was addressed, in a certain way. Cottages do it. Like cities in real world, if someone beguns to work on a slice of land, a little village can growth near..., the cootage turns int a hamlet, etc.

But no, it is not enough to you, eh?... Do you want big metros growing without any governamental control, right? From the dump? Sodoma and Gomorra?

I would probably just try out the mod (if it gets made), but quickly go back to normal research

Since we're at it.... "blind" research could give a greater percentage to end up on certain techs if you act more militaristic, commercial or whattever.

Midding that would be good, but I guess I never modded anything so how should I know

How about to be given a choice in the game (and not before you start the game): If you choose blind research, the research is 10% cheaper than what it would be if you don't use blind research. After each research you get to chose if you want to "gamble" or not for the next tech

                  how about: NO!

you're all wrong. I am right. end of discussion, and if you try contradicting me I'll tip CIA that you have WMD's and connections with terrorists.

I'd love blind research as an option. It would make for an experience closer to a historic simulation

(However, I definitely wouldn't want to force blind research down everybody's throat, especially the MP crowd)

You could have the option to put your Settler on Auto Settle. That would be cool.

Something like that That's how it's done in Alpha Centauri (you get to pick one or more of the four areas to focus your research).

Excellent. I have been suggesting something like that as well - a completely revamped population growth model. This will "build" cities in sensible areas instead of silly areas.

I guess you can build military outposts too, but these may or may not grow into cities.

One of the best features of SMAC was blind research. I recall playing that game with the option off, and finding myself VERY dissapointed that I could head straight to the cloning vats tech by beeline. Yuck.

Real life doesn't allow you to say exactly what technology will be your next discovery. If it did, we'd have solved AIDS and cancer already, and we'd have an SDI that worked. Instead, we got Hollywood and the Internet.

if civ 4 had blind research the AI would probably cheat, get what ever techs it liked, and then threads would started complaining about it
