  • Is the ironclad bugged?

Several times i have taken my 12 strength ironclad against an 8 strength frigate, and lost. When i first happened, i thought maybe the opponent had a more experienced frigate with special abilities.
    Nope.
    Cause it happened again.
    And again.
No matter if i was attacking or defending.
My ironclad loses to the frigate.
    What up wid dat?

Could just simply be bad luck. 12 isn't that far from 8.

That is a pretty substantial ratio, however. Could be bad run of numbers for you, but am interested to hear other's input. (I personally haven't used the Ironclads yet)

I had no problems to destroy frigates with ironclads,
so I´d also think it was just bad luck.

(And I once lost a battleship against a simple destroyer, which has the same ration of strength like the frigate/ironclad-example [with the weaker unit having 3/4 of the strength of the stronger unit])

Yeah in one game where I didnt have any oil or uranium w/in my borders, I had to rely on ironclads for a while....first time in either Civ2/3/4 that I ever had a large ironclad navy....previously always got the better units quickly enough never to have to use ironclads.

anyways back to the original topic, my ironclads faired very well against Rome's Frigates/Galleons. After I sunk about 4-5 of them, Caeser wised up and stopped trying to invade me.

it should be 12 vs 8.8 with the 10% defensive bonus.

2combat knight vs 1combat praetorian....stranger things have happened

Are your ironclads at full health? That matters alot.

Hmm, well I just had a game where my Infantry were constantly defeated by archers defending a city. I had two city attack upgrades and they had one strength upgrade and some bonuses, but it was still 28 to 18 in my favour. Hopefully the patch will address these issues.

the random roller is a little too random for my liking.
better than civ3 though. worse than civ2 though...

just one little addition, ironclads should get a substantial bonus for fighting wooden ships, modding anyone? reason: the iron clad merrimac sunk dozens of woodenships in the american civil war and wasnt stopped until the monitor, another iron clad was sent against it.

Well... and why not a modern battleship?
Every "not-wooden ship" should have a bonus against "wooden ships"... but then comes the question of, why include that bonus?... if everyone has it, then it is not a "bonus" ... why not just increase the strengh of more modern units to actually CREATE A BIG difference between the old wooden fleet and more modern units?...

                      doh...

eerrr... cause modern battleships rely on radar for spotting enemies and wooden ships wont show up on radar so they have a chance of catching them unawares and thereby boarding them!

ok ok ok, you're right, the ironclad should be considerably stronger. as should accordingly all modern ships.

                          Yes, the iron-clad is bugged!

I was moving one of my iron-clads towards the French coast, looking to sneak-attack and plunder his fishing boats while he still only had frigates, so I muttered "I'm going to stick this iron-clad up ..., Napoleon!" and the next turn, HE declared war on ME. He must have heard me, which leaves me to conclude that there was a bug planted on the iron-clad.
