  • Same old Civs

I don't know if this is a help request thread or not. I guess it's really just more of a question...

Does anyone else seem to have the same bunch of Civs in every SP game you play? I've restarted several games in a row and played through a few more. Each time, the first two Civs I meet are the Americans and the Japanese. Half the fun of Civ is that it's open ended, but I pretty much always know who I'm going to run into. It's getting a bit old

    Thoughts?

and let's not forget to mention a related problem -- still present from civ3 -- that you can tell the civs by the color assignment. Again, what seems to be a simple thing to randomize for some reason is overlooked.

For me it's that Mali dude Mr. Mansa -- he's following me from SP to SP.

Do you play as the same Civ each time? It could be related, if there's some 'Cultural starting location' thingummy like Civ3 that hasn't been mentioned.

Mansa seems to pop up quite often for me as well.

I played as a number of different Civs and still get more or less the same start. Sometimes I'm lucky enough to swap Washington for Roosevelt, but that's about it. I'm generally playing Noble, small-standard map (computer's a bit old), varying types of terrain

Edit: I know I could just do a custom game and pick different Civs, but where's the fun in knowing who you're going to face?

You can choose the option "randomize leader traits" or something like that. That way you will be sure to get some different behavior from your opponents -- I assume, as I haven't tried this option out yet.

I just started a Titled Axis world with 18 civs where I picked the Americans - Washington, to start. I assume that I will be seeing the same civs in this game.

I also get Mansa Musa appearing almost all the time. And in most cases, he is my immediate neighbour. He appears that many times that I get frustrated when he pops up in the first few turns of the game. Sometimes, if I'm in a particularly bad mood, I'd quit that game and start over.

Tokugawa also pops up a lot, but its not as frustrating because at least he's rarely my immediate neighbour. It is frustrating, however, that he is seldom ever willing to trade, but that's a frustrating aspect of him for discussion in another thread.

Saladin is another one that seems to come up a lot for me at least, though not nearly enough to be frustrating.

I picked duplicate Civs once just for fun. The English invited me to join them in destroying the vile English

I fiddled with it a bit more tonight and I don't get the same exact Civs every single time, but I definitely question the randomness of the Civ selection. There are a couple of Civs that I know I haven't seen without selecting them myself
