  • Your Most Powerful Unit

    Aside from nukes, what has been your most most powerful unit at the end of a game? What has been the most promotions you've gotten?

    I had a Marine with Combat 1-5 and Medic 1. Now the Modern Armor with Combat 1-3 was still more powerful, but the Marine was around from the begining of the game...

      I don't think I've had more than 5 promotions. Those would be on ancient units, like macemen. But with Agressive so it's actually 6 promotions.

        Depends on the purpose, but the later armour, mech infantry and marines are quite powerfull with their "free" promotion when created.

          I had an infintry that had been promoted all through the game and upgraded from an axeman I think. Also, I was Mongolia, so I had a free extra strength upgrade. In the end he had city raider 1 & 2, combat 1-4, pinch, and ambush. He was level 8, and the game ended a bit before I could make him level 9.

            Hmmm... just finished a game for the purpose of making a powerful unit:

            Modern Armor:
            Blitz (automatic)
            Combat I
            Combat II
            Combat III
            Combat IV
            Combat V
            City Raider I
            City Raider II
            City Raider III
            Commando
            Barrage I

            Game ended with a Time victory.

              I've had only one level 6 unit. A Modern Tank. It was kickass. Then it died.

                You can make a city a super-unit producer if you

                - Have the trait that gives free combat I promotion
                - Built West Point and Red Cross in the same city (use
                a coastal city, add a dock and barracks)
                - Build the Pentagon
                - Adopt Theocracy, and spread your state religion to the
                city.

                Any unit produced here will already have plenty
                of experience points, plus a unit like Mech Inf. or
                Modern armor already start with a promotion.
                Course, Modern Armor doesn't get the Red Cross
                benefit.

                If you engage in a war, don't be afraid to throw
                artillery like lemmings at the enemy, weakening
                them enough to be guaranteed a victory for the
                unit you want to gain experience

                  No, don't do that! Your unit will gain more experience if it's a tougher fight. Gaining just 1 XP per combat becuase your 20-strength unit is fighting units broken down to 2-5 strength is such a SLOW (and boring) way to go.

                    I had a commando infantry with medic one. Getting this unit to level seven took a loooog time, I believe that this guy started out as an axeman. Eventually he became a pillaging machine, able to zoom around in enemy territory then self heal while hiding in a forest. This was a game that I won by conquest in 1880, and I was at war almost the whole game, so I had many level five units, a few sixes, and the super commando guy by the end.

                      MD: if you're at war all the time, how do you cope with WW? after just 3 turns of war i'm getting some 5 extra unhappy faces or so. and that's only at prince level.
                      i know that nationhood and police help but they come a bit later on...

                              shogun gunner: there are probably 15 promotions and you'd need to have
                              2+3+5+7+9+11+13+15+17+19+21+23+25+27+29=226 points for that.
                              so reckon you hit twice every turn with a blitz unit and suffer no losses: 113 turns!!!
