Yes, when you get "The Enemy has been Spotted Near XXX" messages, you'll also get red dots on the mini map.

One of the most frustrating things that I do to myself is to see the message, then have the computer start to cycle through my cities where units/improvements have been finished, then go to my units, and finally pillage to high heaven because I ended my turn having forgotten to send reinforcements!

I would add to the list:
...keep a small mobile stack in addition to my garrisons so that I can stop pillagers without having to leave nearby cities undefended and without their fortification bonuses.
