I played a small (tiny?) terra map and the new world was very thoroughly colonized by Ghandi and Monty before I had even got round to thinking about it. I think it has something to do with the new world being so relatively close to the main land mass. I still got first to circumnavigate though.

On my standard terra map game the AI didnt colonize very well, and I captured the 4 large barbarian cities on 'america' for a big boost. Provost Harrisons jaw nearly hit the floor when he saw how well developed the barbarians had their cities

I've seen barbarian improvements, but not barbarian workers. Do their cities automatically improve if shrouded in fog of war for long enough?

that's a good point. i have not seen them either. i guess playing in debug mode would show it but i don't feel like doing that

I have captured workers in Barbarian cities,
            so yeah, they have them.

Though I haven't seen them out in the field yet...

Have seen them in the field, but it looks like once the civs start colonizing the New World they pull them back in town.

Yeah, well, wouldn't you if a military unit of a civ that was permanently at war comes by your workers?

I have to say that I am loving the pseudo-civilization abilities of the Barbarians in this game - will be excellent for scenarios.

next stop: barbarian cultural victory. or barbarians in space. if the barbarians build the un, do they get to vote?
it's just my opinion. can you dig it?

I believe that it is possible to make Barbarians a full-blown civ, although that would ruin the point of the Barbarians.

Of course, but colonizing the neighbourhood and chasing barb workers are still two different things.

in the last game I played the barbs would have won easily if they were one nation. The new world was populated with size 12 cities with improvements, etc. A menacing sight for my reluctant colonists. I didn't manage to finish them off until 1980 or so, at which point they had infantry guarding the cities.

that's because barb cities are very difficult to take.
