  • Do AI Civs ever attack each other?

I've only played IV three times now, twice on warlord and once on noble. In each game, I never saw the AIs attack each other nor have I seen an AI civ destroy another AI civ. However, they are quite persistant in attacking me for no apparent reason.

    Yes, the AI does it.
In my last game, Louis XIV wiped out the poor Elizabeth, with an excellent use of combined armies and promoted units (I was watching – I’ve founded Hinduism, the England State Religion… )...
And I was playing just on Chieftain
I’ve started my first warlord game today, but RL (work ) comes first.
    But tonight…

I played a game a while back where by the time the two main continents made contact, two civs were already wiped out on the other continent and the aztecs had taken over a huge amount of territory.

One I saw went this way:

I am busy eliminating Egypt for the crime of being in my way. It is taking some effort. I get to the point where there are two cities left in Egypt. I am next to one of them and have started bombardment turns. Suddenly, Persia, my best friend whose open borders have allowed me a shortcut to much of Egyptian land, up and declares war on Egypt. I have just enough vision to see a bunch of Persian units entering Egypt. Next turn, the other Egyptian city has fallen and Persian troops are sidling up next to mine for this Egyptian city. I finish bombardment, then don't feel I have the turn to do collateral damage run because Persia is looking to walk right in. So I sent in my troops, took much more damage than I wanted, but still took the city. Egypt is now gone. The scant and injured troops in the city don't have to worry about counter attacks. I'm thinking to myself. "That was pretty nasty. Letting me do all the dirty work and then jumping in for a one city quick profit."

The very next thought was reluctant praise to the AI, "Sounds like something I would do."

I went on to a Domination victory and Persia stayed my best friend, although they never got such an opportunity again. Watch out for your allies.

AI Civs defently attack each other, and often they also destroy a whole Civilization

I've only played on Noble though
This space is empty... or is it?

I was really just thrown for a loop by the usual AI "Bonus" in my last game. I had a geograpical advantage and had a civ boxed-in on the continent so it only had three cities and few resources. However, I maintained open borders, the leader was "pleased" with me the entire game, and we had some trade routes together.

I had a spy in all three of the AIs cities, and since the AI only had like 2 longbowmen and an axeman in each citiy, I only kept three units in my cities on that border.

I decide to attack another civ because I need coal and they have it. I move most of my units to that border area, but left the same three units on my other border.

As I was preparing to send my troops across the border for that coal, the little-civ suddenly appears across my border with grenadiers, capapaults, rifleman and cavalry and declares war on me. The AI went from completely happy with three units in it's cities to an army of 20 advanced units for which it didn't have the tech or the resources to build, in three turns.

Suddenly tiny-civ razed three of my border towns and I had to ship my coal army across my civ to take out the now not-so-tiny civ.

I am used to this kind of stuff happening with the AI (suddenly leaping ahead 5 techs, building like 20 advanced units in a turn despite the wrong civics, etc.). I just got tired of constantly being attacked by civs that were pleased with me and never seeing the AI attack each other even when I asked them what they thought of "so and so" leader and they were annoyed with them.

The only time I saw the AI fight was when I instigated it by declaring war, then paying off a neighboring civ with a tech advance in order to make it a two-front war for that civ.

I am starting game 4 tonight. If this same kind of thing happens again, this game will be shelved until the first patch is released.

I love the game too much to get so pissed at it all the time.

I've had the AI attack one another. I have also instigated numerous attacks by getting them to declare war on one another. Great way to keep me on top. If I get attacked I'll try to get someone else on their border to attack them as well. No need for the aggressor to focus solely on me.

On a bit of a tangent... In my last game one of my neighbouring civs diligently halted a barb attack on one of my cities by wiping them out! On my territory at that! Thank you very kindly my friend! And here I had been planning on declaring war on them... Couldn't do it after that.

Here's something that seems to work:

I play on Monarch and I managed to create a permanent alliance with Spain in order to destroy England.. until England actually destroyed both of us
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.
