  • Mercantilism: working properly ?

    - +1 free specialist per city
    - no foreign trade routes

Is there some kinda trick to getting the free specialist? I only received them in about 30% of my cities!

worked for me in my last game. a great way to expand your borders in terra maps when not playing a creative civ.

it bugged for me. I was persia, my bestest buddy alexander adopted mercantilism, but I still got trade bonuses from his cities. probably just because he liked me so much

I think it's no foreign trade routes for the civ with Mercantilism. If he has open borders there's no reason to prevent you from having foreign trade routes with him.

maybe you are confused. Unlike "forced" specialists, the free specialist assigned by the computer has no yellow boarder around its picture. Its kinda hard to spot if he has no boarder, and it confused me a little at first.

No, I specifically checked each city, some specialists say (free specialist) at the bottom of the list of things they provide, some say (forced) - I was able to remove all specialists, put some back, and none would say (free specialist)...

Can anyone test this for themselves?

It's always worked for me AFAIK, but I may just not have been paying close enough attention. When you say "removing all specialists" does that mean put them to work on tiles? You shouldn't be able to put any free specialists to work tiles, so that would be the surest way to see if you had them or not.

I mean, unless Im misunderstanding "+1 free specialist per city" then there seems to be some kinda bug or something here.

I look thru all my cities, some have a permenant free specialist there that shows him as (free specialist) and some cities have no specialists there, i can add and subtract all of them, at all times the only specialists in the city says (forced)...

Is there stipulations like the city has to be growing or it has to be over size 12 or something ?

Are you counting laborers (not working tiles) as specialists? If you don't have a building or civic to allow for a specialist in a city, then the free specialist will be a laborer.

does it make sense then to run mercantilism and force UN resolution on free trade at the same time? or does the resolution cancel that civic option?

OK. As far as I can tell, Mercantilism does give me my free specialist and it cuts off all my trade with other cities. =DrJambo= is right; the civic only forces YOU to give up trade with others. The bonus is the free specialist. That may be a bug or it may be a feature. Can't tell.

Adopting a UN provision on any civic forces all players to adopt that civic.

I don't htink it's a bug; i had the same "problem" you described with some specialist saying "free" and some not saying that -- but it does work; remove all specialists, count the number of circles in the city screen of tiles being worked, and then when you add a specialist you will notice that none of the circles are removed.
