  • Who plays tiny maps?

Since Civ3 I have always enjoyed playing tiny maps with around 8 civs. I think it makes the game much more difficult and interesting. You have more wars in general with Civ4's AI. Plus each war is more meaningful. Taking one city can be a huge turning point. And you don't have to go to city after city for hundreds of years to take out another civ. You can actually plan an attack that will only last a few turns but cripple or defeat another civ. You should try a game or two at this setting if you haven't already.

Aren't Resources spread very thinly, though, leading very quickly to a Law of Dichotomy, Dominance or Submission implosion?

yeah I can't imagine the resource problems. I still want to try as many civs as possible on a tiny map though. .

Right now I'm playing my warmonger games on small maps. It makes taking over the world much easier than large maps . I just don't think I'll have enough time to do it even on a standard map.

I usually play tiny or small, with four or five civs. As slowly as I play, it still takes a long time to finish a game.

By the way, I highly recommend modding the game to slow down science advances while slightly speeding up unit production, and production of buildings and wonders. You can do that easily by changing one file.

I mostly only play tiny and never play greater than small. I like to scratch and claw for every tile. You have to accept mediocre city sites and make the best out of what you get.
Eight civs always means that one or two civs will be the runts, but its gives a challenge when its you.

Tiny is good. I even played Duel with high sea level and 18 civ. That was a lot of fun.

I played tiny with just two other civs, but with raging barbarians as well. That in fact made the barbarians a major player in the game, and was quite fun, because they tended to pop up in unexpected places.

I played my first tiny duel map last night, and it was a TERRA map

Began as the Indians, Asoka. As expected quickly ran into the Greeks, Arabians. But since I began on the coast and had 3 clams, elephants, and 3 forested hills I began the master plan.

Took a massive chance and did a worker first. Once done I began a settler and CHOP CHOP CHOP I went. Quickly got a settler and plop went the first city gaining me a nice chunk of land north of the center based greeks.

Second settler just beat the aztecs to the south locking them in place. I also noticed that had NO BS 4 fish resources

Meanwhile back at home base my first warrior was done, then bam bam 3 fishing boats. My other 2 cities where just making units. Got iron and copper close to my 2 expansion cities WOOT. Out come the swordsmans

I played nice, meeting the Eygptians, English, Romans, Japanese, and the Aztechs.

Once I got catapaults I had enough units to start the march.

Took the Arabians but Sarian was still alive?? Found out later he got an isle so I made nice with him. That tiny isle was no worry.

Rolled onto the greeks, then quickly the Eygptians, English and the Japanese keeping each city. By now I had reached maceman and knights.

Ceaser had 2 cities as well as the Aztecs. Offered alot to Montazuma to declare war and healed for a few turns while they weakened each other.

WHAM onto the 2nd Roman city which I burned, then took Rome. WHAM straight onto the Aztecs. Burn the lesser city and took the capital.

By now it was 1345 so I quickly made all costal cities making galley's (Why cant caravels carry units??)

Sarian was not happy to see me return LOL

Final score 57,955 and I was amazed. Fast furious and fun. Small maps do rock in CIV
He knows changes are not permanent, but change is!

Sounds fun. Just might have to try a small map. Always end up taking standard or larger for some reason...
