  • Mid-Game Woes

I've gotten towhere I can hang with the AI on Monarch level in the early game. However, by the time I hit mid-game, I always seem to fall behind in tech. I've been playing the Chinese, industrious/financial. Any suggestions?

Im playing a Monarch game myself at the moment and I think Im doing pretty well in regards to technology and doing well over all I would say (3/8). I cant really think of what Ive dont thats been exceptional though. One thing I have done differently to normal is I have not built every building possible like I normally do. Ive built libraries and am starting to build universities. Ive built barracks in most of my cities. A few national wonders such as Heroic Epic and that other 'Epic' one. But other then that my buildings have been kept to a strict minimum so as to avoid maintenance. Basically, I havent built any building unless it was going to give me a direct benefit, for example I dont have any aqueducts at all, because my Civilization has been healthy the whole time through careful trading. Not having to spend money on maintaining my useless buildings has enabled me to keep my science up and dominate through my military. When the time comes I will look at building more improvements but overall I build much less then I need to.

I like that point about not building improvements that you don't really need. I'm afraid I tend to build everything without giving it much thought. It's a habit that I will have to break. I still feel like I'm missing something though.

I doubt your missing anything major. Its likely to be a collection of tiny little things. Such as making the most use of your city buildings. Using your national wonders more wisely.

Post a copy of your save game and some people might look at it for you.

I don't understand. Surely there is no building maintenance in Civ 4 - only city maintenance.

Hmm your correct. I had assumed that part of the cost of maintaining a city was still calculated from city improvements but it seems that none of it is after having another look. So basically that means theres is little or no reason why you shouldnt pack all the buildings you can into a city then I guess, other then the fact that it takes time and hammers to build them.

Guess I might as well start cranking out the markets and banks afterall!

Man, city buildings don't cost upkeep, it's the city itself that costs ...
Of course, you could say the more buildings a city has, the more likely it will grow, and civic upkeep is proportional to population and will grow too.

First post here. Guess it's time to say "hi"

I'm playing prince only, but I tend to run into problems in mid-game too. Around the time of astronomy I start to lag behind the AI.

What techs do you people emphasize at that time? The AI seems to go for astronomy pretty fast. Is it really that vital?

How many cities do you have by that time? I think maybe I don't found enough of them. I have usually around 5-8 cities at that time.

Also: When do you wage war? I often find myself locked in a landmass that is big enough for 5-8 cities, but usually not more. So when do I attack the AIs around me? Early or mid game?

                So much to learn, sigh.

It might not be the techs you're choosing, but a lack of commercial infrastructure in your cities that's slowing you down. Early cottages --> mid game towns --> strong economy --> fast research.

Having allies to trade with doesn't do any harm either, although even allies often won't trade techs with wonders attached, or new military techs.

Hmm, okay, no building maintenance. I guess I wasn't wrong on that. I'm wondering if the key isn't in the judicious use of specialists. It would be great if someone wrote a guide on using them. I would attempt it myself, but my ignorance is too great.
