Man this has been the most fun of any civ game I've played to date. I've just been overwhelmed trying to keep up with my neighbors on the crowded old world, take out the massively powerful barbs on the new world, and still keep up with tech enough to hopefully win a space race victory.
My neighbors have been very annoying. Luckily I managed to get friendly with the largest and most powerful in the early game, the greeks. Unfortunately, the greeks are even better friends with my worst enemy, the russians. It's dumb though, because the russians are all the way on the opposite side of the continent from me, yet they use open border treaties to attack me once in a while. Because I can't tell where they will attack from and they are very unpredictable, often declaring war out of the blue when pleased, I usually have to load a couple turns back and bribe them off less I have to fight wars on three fronts. Whoo!
In the early game I basically bee-lined for astronomy, planning on conquering the new world. Everything was going great, I managed to hold off my opponenets long enough to be able to be the first by far to be able to explore the new world. Also I am on the eastern shore of the old world continent so it's only a few quick turns away to the new world. I dropped off an explorer on the new continent and sailed around the coast with caravels, and eventually got a settler over with a galleon with some maceman as escorts.
Little did I know, the new world was already populated completely over with size 12 walled, worker developed barb cities! My few macemen barely managed to hold off their constant barrages of longbowmen. I named my first town Jamestown since I am Americans, and it's pretty cool how I use explorers to explore and even need to use forts to defend.
The problem is that the barbs were so massively settled, I still havn't been able to take them all out yet. The year in my game now is 1820 and I have infantry, but the barb cities now have rifleman defenders! It's taken many reinforcement trips via galleons of maceman, catapults, rifleman, and cannons to get a foothold. By this point in the game I do have the north america area cleared out except for one large last city.
However, back home, things are stirring up. the Germans, to my north, and who have been eyeying my northerly border city for some time, decided to make a move. They had a huge, well equiped army of rifleman, grenadiers, and catapults. I had to reload a few turns back in order to go to zero science so I could afford to upgrade all my warriors to machine guns! I just barely managed to hold them off in an epic battle, and even got the greeks to declare war on them to hold them off for a while.
The problem is that twofold, one I am not usually militarily oriented and only have as few troops as nescessary for defense, except when I'm planning on attacking soon. Second, my forces are split between the new and old worlds. And even by the end of the game, it will have taken so much effort to conquer the new world that my cities there won't be that developed, so I don't even know if it was worth it! I really am in a dilly of a pickle here!
I decided I had to go to bed for work tomorrow, so I'd just play one more turn. And in that last turn, the damned Russians declared war on me and sent a massive stack of well armed troops to my southern border! Now I'm fighting a war on three fronts against some of the strongest opponents (barbs included!). Man, what a night. I played for over three hours and yet only got about 50 years through, from 1775 to 1825. I can't wait to get back again tomorrow night!
