  • What video cards actually work very well with this game?

It looks like I need to upgrade my video card to play this game, and many others might be in the same boat. Nothing is more frustrating and maddening than buying a new card and then either being unable to play the game or having poor performance. So I thought it would be good to have a thread listing players video cards that work well with this game:

-- no slowness even after days of playing
    -- no ragged movies
    -- ideally, no crashing

For a reference thread it would be best if replying players would
    follow this 4 point format:

    1. VIDEO CARD - manufacturer and model number

    2. VIDEO RAM - size

    3. PERFORMANCE SCALE -
    100 points=no latency, game screams
50 points = some slowness, but game runs
0 points = can't get game to run with card

    4. DISCUSSION - open ended

Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences.

        AMD Athlon 2000+ (1.7GHz)
        768MB RAM
        ATI 9550 -128MB video card
        Aureal3D sound (really old)

It runs great for small maps but the big maps are sluggish even with AA turned off. Other than sluggishness, no problems. Keep in mind that I also have turned off all the UI features in WinXP by hand and have no extra processes running that aren't absolutely necessary. There are a lot of places on the web that address how to get max performance out of your machine.

BTW, I run HL2 and Doom3 really well. I'm surprised at how sluggish Civ4 gets later in the game. Maybe the memory leaks will be fixed in the patch?

How much RAM do you have on your system? Also does it work fine with large and huge maps?

I have a Geforce Go 5200, but on larger maps I get quite a bad slow down of the game interface. I have 512MB RAM, so I'm wondering if upgrading it would make a real difference, or whether the graphics card is still a bottleneck (which I obviously can't upgrade, since I have a laptop).

              GEForce FX 5700

              1. VIDEO CARD - Asus GeForce FX5700 - $65 from pricewatch!

              2. VIDEO RAM - 256 Mb

              3. PERFORMANCE SCALE - 95
              100 points=no latency, game screams
50 points = some slowness, but game runs
0 points = can't get game to run with card

              4. DISCUSSION - I uprgraded from a GeForce 2 - which I would have classified as a 25 on the performance scale. It's been amazing. I only gave the 5700 a 95 because I've had one case where the whole screen went blank, and after about 30 seconds, I was back in the desktop. However, the game was still active (just minimized) - almost like I'd hit Alt-Tab (but I hadn't!).

Other PC specs - 512 Mb RAM PC2100 DDR, 1.6 MHz Pentium 4, and Virtual RAM set to 1.5 GB.

                Planetfall! Long time no see.

Can't help your card query as mine is causing reboots once in every five or six hours of play (usually in the late game). Nice to see you back at poly though.
