In my last game I was trading iron to the Egyptians for horses. My friend and religious affiliate Germany asked to stop trading and so I did. Less than 5 turns later the Germans declared war on the Egyptians, who, without iron, could not withstand the assault for very long. Smart AI or just a coincidence?

Coincidence, I suspect. I don't think the AI has the ability to know what you are trading, just that you are. At least, the player certainly doesn't.
