      Another game they had one city that I fortified an archer just outside in the forest, so whenever they spawned a sword or axe (don't remember which) they attacked and lost, and gave my unit experience. Once I had macemen I took the city (yay!).
      I tried this strategy last night and it worked pretty well. Fortified an archer in Forest by the barb city and my archer got lots of experience.

        Either prepare for visiting barbs, or strategically station units to keep the fog rolled back. In my games, early free missionaries often get exiled to hills in the outreaches of the empire to ensure the barbs don't appear. It's a Moses-in-the-desert kind of thing. Often I move then back and forth to keep a large area covered. There seems to be a number of turns of fog that are required to spawn barbs, or at least some relationship.

          BE careful to not have any fog in your own territory.

          Barbarians can in fact spawn anywhere "foggy"
