  • Random Reboot

Anyone else having problems with the game just randomly rebooting? No error messages, nothing in the event logs; just without warning the machine reboots. It can happen anytime or anyplace. It can reboot after loading a game, or it can reboot after playing for an hour. It can happen while I'm staring at the screen, or it can happen when I press a key. It can happen at the main menu, or it can reboot playing that intro movie before the main menu. I left the game up while I had dinner, only to come back and find the machine had rebooted.

Problem started when I put in a new video card. I installed a Radeon 9600 Pro. I got the render error, but the art unpak fixed that. The card came with 5.09 drivers. In addition, I've tried the current 5.11 as well as the older 4.12 drivers with no success.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

      Allo!

I had this same problem when I disabled Mipmapping and when I forced Mipmapping to LOW on nVHardPage (I have a nVidia FX 5200). I see you guys use Radeon, but this may also be your problem.

      Check your mipmapping configurations... =)

      Hope this helps.

What is "Mipmapping" and where would I find it?

Well, I located the "mipmapping" in the Catalyst control center. It was a slider that allowed to set the "mipmapping" to various degrees between high performance and high quality. I could find no setting that had any bearing on my Random Reboot (RR) feature.

I've also been doing a lot of reading on ATI's website. They make mention of a problem with refresh rates above 60Hz for some directX 3D games.

Well, I did some experimenting with all of the possible refresh rates AND resolution combinations supported by my card. In every single instance, the game would Randomly Reboot (RR) the machine.

I'm running out of ideas, here. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

There is an old saying about being careful about what you wish for:

Well, I thought I might give the ever popular omega drivers a try. Unfortunately, this turns out to be less than a brilliant move. I uninstall the ATI drivers, go through a reboot and then install the omega drivers (and yet another reboot). I load up Civ 4. Before it gets to the main menu it reboots.

I try it again to see if it was a fluke, but then I get "failed to initialize renderer" message again! Ok, I've still got the unpak tool, so I unpak the art file for a second time. Run Civ 4 and "failed to initialize renderer".

Well, at least it doesn't reboot anymore, right?

              Allo!

Well... i guess i rushed things :-) I'm having reboots after some 90-100 minutes of constant play... But if I close the game and restart it after some 80 minutes, I don't have reboots anymore.

Hehe, not the best solution, but it works =))
