Maybe I should start a thread enumerating all the things on my packaging and in my manual that just simply aren't true.

Start an unofficial Manual Errata thread.

(Errata = "errors")

There is much in the game that the manual doesn't cover (or "mis"-covers). That's the problem with manuals having to be printed BEFORE a game goes gold!

e.g., did you know that if you mouse-over the GRAPHIC of the unit selected in the lower left, it details all the bonuses of the unit;
... or that double-clicking on your banner by the minimap is the same as pressing F10?

I surely hope the patch will come out later, so that they can resolve most of the problems, and not just a few typos and civilopedia entries.

None of the problems are game-stoppers for me, so I can wait.

hmm so the problem with my game crashing every other turn is not happening to everyone?

huge map, epic game... 1990s now.

I'd recommand not to play then huge maps for now. I play only on regular maps and I had only one crash until now. At the end the game is usually laggy, but at least playable.

Try some regular maps until the patch comes out.

Of course, it is also important what kind of a computer you have. I think I will never try huge maps with my current configuration.

No, just that pinning hopes on 'patch next week' based on what someone has heard what some helpdesk guy has said (who - in the first few days - was probably swamped with questions and obuse and may have decided to go "patch, next week". ) may not be the best thing.

Knowing Firaxis, at some point, the're will be one.

Of course there will be a patch, but because of the reasons I mentioned in the other thread, to give an exact date, which they btw didn't do, would be no good. Of course I'd like a patch, but not before it has fixed enough problems and there's a large chance most new problems has been fixed too.
