It changes the world map so you can tell where you are in relation to the north/south poles. It also turns your world view into a globe instead of just a zoomed out flat map.

Just like the tech Calendar, it allows you to zoom out farther and see the entire globe at best. Most people go for Stonehenge for the Great People Points and the culture, not the centering, although it's pretty nice.
Cake and grief counseling will be available at the conclusion of the test. Thank you for helping us help you help us all!
When the game starts, your world map reflects what you know of the world ... you can't really tell if you're in the middle, at a pole, or what. When the world map gets "centered," what you know of the map is put in the context of the entire globe.
In the image below, the maps are pre- and post-calendar. In the first my civ was the center of the world, then I find I'm kind of tucked in the NW corner of the map with lots of unexplored territory.

I don't like to be able to center the world map, it kinda ruins the fun
it makes stonehenge more valuable
btw, i was shocked in my first game when it looked like my standard map was only going to be 20x15 tiles... until i scouted and found the minimap to zoom out and out. another GREAT addition to the game, i must say!
cool also for random sizes. you'll only know what it is when you meet your first oponent (how close) or from the tech speed
