for some reason, every time i try to start a game, it goes through the entire green loading bar very slowly and chopped up, and when its loaded and done, the background turns black, while the loading screen still stays up, and the music suddenly changes, and i have to crash every single time. Can anyone explain how to fix this? Thank you.

I have the same problem.
I downgraded my nVidia drivers for my 6800 Ultra to 71.85, as others have done, and can now run the game. But only on small or lower maps, and only on normal or quick. I have a good system, over 1 GB of RAM and aforementioned 6800 Ultra 512MB. It runs Doom3 smooth as cream, so why not Civ4?
It's mad...please release a patch soon. -
Just confirmation of this.
Finished playing a 7 hour session, no problems at all. No downgrade in performance.
However, still crashes if I try to start a game with `big' maps. It doesn't seem to matter how complicated the game gets once it's started...
