Unfortunately I don't have access to reskits later than NT4 or W98, else I'd have had some other tools to muck up my system with..
Never mind, this system's due for a wipe-&-reload anyway.
Thinking about it I should have spotted a potential registry problem when reading http://ghost.radified.com - there's a section in there that specifically says /don't/ mount two drives with cloned OS's 'cos the registry gets screwed. As I'd done this for my father a week before, it should have clicked. Ah well, at least it wasn't important..
