  • Destroyers carrying units

    not possible you thought?

    Wrong.
    It can be done.

Knowing that Caravels upgrade to destroyers I decided to test wether a unit which is on board of the Caravel still stays on Board after upgrade.
Therefore I left an explorer on board and, as you can see down below, the result was a destroyer carrying an explorer
It can also be unloaded the normal way (but, of course, not board the destroyer again )

    Hm,
to be honest, I don´t think it is very useful to be used on a large scale. But if you upgrade your caravels, using it it could mean a one time very secure transport for one of your spies, missionaries or great persons

Agreed, it's a bug, but what *should* the behavior be?

      - Not allow the upgrade?

      - Allow the upgrade, but dump the passenger out of the ship?
--- In the city, if the ship is in a city.
--- On the nearest land, if the ship is in coastal water.
--- Pasenger drowns if ship is in the ocean?

      - Allow the upgrade but merge the two units, so you now have a destroyer that ignores forest and hill movement costs? (see http://davidszondy.com/future/war/battleship.htm )

I don't think the ship should be upgradeable out in the open ocean anyway. That isn't entirely realistic, so a true fix would be to require the Caravel to return to port for the upgrade, and at that time the passenger debarks.

I think that's the right approach.

Yep, that´s the same thing I also think.
Any solutions to this bug can only involve either automatically transferring the passenger to the nearest land (perhaps within your borders) or friendly city,
or to revamp the upgrade-system and allow upgrading of marine units only within friendly cities (after all simply letting the passenger drown would too annoying for the player [especially if the victim is a great person ]).
