Barracks, on the front line or deep inside?

No reason not to put barracks everywhere eventually. The free promotion is hard to pass up.

And sometimes early on there isn't much else you can build. Sometimes I'll work on a barracks for a few turns until a new tech opens up something else, I go build that and then return back to the barracks. I love the fact that your hammers are not lost on old projects (though they do degrade over a long period of time).

No, they can upgrade anywhere. If you ALT-click on the upgrade button it'll automatically upgrade as many as you can afford, and they don't even have to be in cities. This is cool, I used to hate all the micromanagement of upgrades with barracks cities in Civ 3.
