  • Flooded by barbarians

Am I the only one who keeps on getting flooded by barbarians? I've played a couple of games at noble level and efter some turns barbarians start coming from all directions - several new units come into sight every single turn for many consecutive turns!

I know they come from areas of the map that are not visible at the moment and that I should keep patroling my borders and I do! It just doesn't help.

The number of barbarians are so great that I find it difficult to expand, to gather new resources and to build improvements faster than they pillage them Actually the barbarians have got better units than I do since I can't get to the horses, bronze, iron etc.

Whats going on? Are they spawned in villages that I need to find and destroy (I haven't seen a single one yet)?

They could have a town and even have improvements. They will crank out units form these if left alone.

I am not sure how it works, but they seem to come in several directions, if you do not have troops or did not expand enough.

Once you expand to clear the FOW they will still come form any towns. Those have to be captured or razed. They may have many units in it.

You do not want to let them get axemen while you have archers. Even axe Vs axe can be risky.

Jaguar warrior against axe works pretty well, but then you need to play the Aztecs...

Slap down some forts at your borders, after a few barb attacks it's pretty obvious what direction they come from. Build up your troops and go find the buggers! Sometimes they have cities in really nice locations.

I seldom see too much to the barbs, and not more than that I easily can handle it. I always play on Noble, and I've had no problems with them so far, other than the easily stopped attack every X turn.

Maybe noble is too hard for you?
Also when you play archipelago, they won't come as often

I've started playing monarch and they're not too bad - though they are annoying. I just try to keep some warriors stationed on some hills out around the expanses of where I think I can expand and scout my settlement area with warriors and mobile forces as I get them. killing barbarians is fun and gives nice initial xp.

Err... last I checked, Jaguars were melee units, making this a really BAD idea.

Best way to deal with barbarians is to clear the surrounding land - make it visible with borders or sentries. Barbarians don't tend to head for your cities until they get within a certain distance, so if you don't allow them to spawn within that distance, life is good.

Well of course I beat the c... out of them but it just annoys me I can't have my workers working in at least relative peace. I'm playing Terra.

and they seem to really harrass you when you are starting to build a wonder

and the barbs hardly attack/ harrass the AI civs

A barb unit had two choices of attack
                        1. me two hex's out ....squares, old habbit
2 AI unit 1 square out

                        guess who was attacked
anti steam and proud of it

CDO ....its OCD in alpha order like it should be

Err... last I checked, I was wrong. Perhaps they were doing so well because they were in the jungle or I gave them a shock promotion. In any case just ignore what I said.

It's even worse if you're playing OCC with raging barbs turned on. I tried that and they were sending wave after wave of axemen at me before my borders had expanded far enough to get iron or copper. Defending against axemen with archers is not fun!

I was having the same problem but reading this thread I think I have figured out. I am playing Terra but I modded it so that the civs are randomly distributed around the globe. And my civ must have been placed in the "New World" which has Barbarian cities. So I must find and attack those cities. This also means that the civs that started in the "Old World" have an advantage now. Grrr
